Art vs. Craft: Tug of War

Posted by on April 20, 2009

Tug of war

Wednesday night join me in the age old discussion of what is art and what is craft.

As part of the craftapalooza that is CraftWeek DC, the Washington Project for the Arts has put together a panel discussion on the dividing line that is art and craft, (or is there one?) called Tug of War.

Curator and critic, Jeffry Cudlin will moderate a panel consisting of one artist, one crafter (that’s me) and two gallery directors. Each will give their thoughts on where the line is drawn between the two terms, and the discussion will open up to the audience.

When all is said and done, panelists and audience members will be invited to participate in the Art vs. Craft tug of war! Pick the side that speaks to you and tug, tug, tug!

Which end do you think I’ll end up on?

How Handmade will Save the World

Posted by on April 13, 2009

I had an interesting conversation with Matt from greenUPGRADER last week. On doing some research on a topic, he happened upon a line in my bio that’s floating around on these here internets. The one where I proclaim that handmade will save the world.

It’s something that, to be honest I haven’t put a whole lot of thought into. It’s not a fully developed thought and while talking with Matt, I realized that there is a lot to think about, but I had a lot of opinions on it too. And while I don’t have a solid thesis to go off of, it’s something that I believe in 100%. Completely and absolutely, hence the line in my bio.

Sounds crazy right?

Well over the next couple of weeks, I’m going to fully explore this here belief of mine and outline for you why I know that handmade will save the world. And be on the lookout for an article from Matt on the same subject.

Perhaps at the end of the discussion, I’ll have converted you as well.

I successfully completed my Upcycled Secret Santa gift. A part of an event hosted by Hello Craft, all participants were asked to use found materials/objects to make something new, for their secret Santa.

My secret Santa might be getting her gift a little bit late as I really wanted to keep my wee creation.

If you are a part of Hello Craft’s Upcycled Secret Santa Swap – discontinue reading right now, until you have received your gift. Then, and only then can you see what I made for my secret Santa.
