I’ve been away from this space, being busy in others. Check out what I’ve been up too!
>> Most recently I was a Guest Curator over at Etsy for Crafting a Green World. It was much fun highlighting the great green creations that these crafters make. Ha! Say that five times fast.
>> I also got a sneak peek at the new Maya Lin exhibit, now open at the Corcoran. You can read my review over at DCist.
>> I’ve also been organizing and planning and emailing, going into the home stretch for Hello Craft’s Summit of Awesome.

Tonight is the opening of DCist’s third annual juried photography show DCist Exposed. The exhibition showcases new talent as the artists reveal the city through the eyes of the people who live and work in the D.C. area. The show is community-based and works are affordably priced to develop the next generation of arts patrons.
I will be at the opening reception tonight at Flashpoint Gallery. You should definitely stop by, as this is going to be a great show. You can preview all of the winners before hand over at DCist.
DCist Exposed runs from February 20 through March 7, 2009. The opening reception is tonight from 5-9pm. The gallery is located at 916 G Street, NW and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 12 to 6 p.m. or by appointment.

I got an email the other day, alerting me to an alumni competition called 30 Objects, hosted by my alma mater, the Savannah College of Art and Design. These emails always jar me a bit, make me take note. Not because of the content of the email (more on that in a bit) but because my age tracks with the school.
It is so crazy to think that I am as old as a university and that I attended a school that was and still is so young. Just makes me go, huh.
The call for entries is kind of interesting. They ask for submissions that incorporate 30 objects of the artist’s choosing and must be able to fit on a 48-inch, round platform. Artists will be reimbursed for up to $500 in supplies and artists whose proposals are selected will be awarded a $2,000 prize.
Sounds kind of neat. Gives me an idea. Something to commemorate my 30 years. I have to think on it, but it will have something to do with collecting 30 things. I have time, I’m not the big 3-0 yet. Any suggestions? Perhaps it is something I could even submit to the competition. Ooh the possibilities.

Over the holiday I had the opportunity to visit the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, while visiting friends. We arrived at the museum in the early afternoon, and quickly realized that we wouldn’t have nearly enough time to explore it in its entirety. So we split up and went our separate ways to explore as we saw fit.
I made it my goal to see everything. Crazy, yes, but not impossible. I knew that I wouldn’t be back for a very long time and I wanted to see as much as possible.
Starting on the top floor, the museum had a focus exhibit on Joan MirĂ³. The name piqued something in my brain and the work there was somewhat familiar but nothing that slowed me down too much.
I proceeded to the next floor down. Here is where I started to slow, realizing what I was surrounded by. The first painting that stopped me in my tracks was The Sleeping Gypsy by Henri Rousseau. Les Demoiselles d’Avignon by Picasso came next. Work by Salvador Dali, Jasper Johns, Gustav Klimt, Robert Delaunay, Meret Oppenheim, Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg, Louise Nevelson, Eva Hesse, Egon Schiele….
